If you haven’t heard of the car manufacturer “Isdera”, do not worry, you won’t be the only one!
Isdera are a privately run company based in Germany, they are manufacturers of extremely rare high performance cars, with each vehicle being hand built by a small team of craftsmen. Fascinatingly, the only way you will be able to order a new Isdera is by phoning the CEO directly!
Their first car, the Spyder 033, was unveiled in 1982. Some other vehicles from the company’s history are the 1985 Spyder 033-16, 1987 Spyder 036i and the Commendatore 112i. However, most of their adulation is born out of the incredible Isdera Imperator 108i.
Eberhard Schulz, the founder of Isdera and the man behind the Imperator, was formerly employed by Porsche’s development department and he also worked as a design engineer at Mercedes. With the blessing and financial support of Mercedes, his engineering company developed a mid-engined supercar study called Mercedes CW311. Despite being reluctant to put the CW311 into production itself, Mercedes-Benz allowed Schulz for produce the vehicle under his own brand, and so, the Isdera Imperator 108i was born
Isdera Imperator’s were built in exceptionally scarce numbers, during a production run between 1984-1993 only 30 examples were ever produced making them a highly sought after commodity in the collectible car world.
Despite its futuristic exterior design, the technology this car employed was not too radical, whilst never the fastest supercar of its day, it was certainly one of the rarest and most intriguing – and quick enough to be an emperor of the autobahn.
The striking gullwing coachwork on a tubular steel chassis is powered by the highly regarded Mercedes-Benz M119 5-Litre V8. The combination of super-lightweight construction and outrageous power, results in astounding performance.
