Matt LeBlanc will be ‘there for you’… when Top Gear returns to the BBC in May. The BBC announced today that U.S actor Matt LeBlanc, instantly recognisable as Joey from the sitcom Friends, would be co-hosting the revitalised show alongside veteran broadcaster Chris Evans.
“As a car nut and a massive fan of Top Gear, I’m honoured and excited to be a part of this iconic show’s new chapter,” said LeBlanc. The actor has history with the show, having been the star in a reasonably priced car back in 2012. LeBlanc managed a lap-time of 01.42.1 becoming the fastest celebrity to grace the track in the Kia Cee’d.
Evans was named as Top Gear’s new host last year after the BBC opted not to renew Jeremy Clarkson’s contract in the wake of his much-publicised “fracas” with a Top Gear producer.
Clarkson subsequently signed up with streaming service Amazon Prime to present a new motoring show with Richard Hammond and James May, his former Top Gear co-presenters.
The news has gone down rather well with fans online, one Twitter user posted: “The BBC have played a blinder signing up Matt Le Blanc for
#TopGear. Great announcement.” This sentiment has been echoed by the outspoken Piers Morgan who welcomed LeBlanc’s appointment, calling him “a brilliant choice [with] huge global recognition”.
