Travel Back To The Future and Learn the History Behind the DeLorean DMC-12

Delorean DMC-12 1981 For Sale at DD Classics

The DeLorean DMC-12 looks every bit as intoxicating now as it did back in the 1980s, stainless steel panels and all. While very much a product of its time, there are few cars – at any price point – that remain quite so iconic and instantly recognisable to all who see it. Sadly, there’s no flux capacitor and the DMC-12 doesn’t come with a helpful white-coated Doc to assist with maintenance and it won’t actually time travel.

The DMC-12 is a sports car manufactured by John DeLorean’s DeLorean Motor Company. The DeLorean DMC-12 was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Ital Design who also designed the Lotus Esprit and the original Volkswagen Golf. This model was commonly referred to simply as the DeLorean because it was the only model ever produced by the DeLorean Motor Company. The car features gull-wing doors, an innovative fibre glass chassis and underbody structure, along with a brushed stainless steel body. John DeLorean was 6ft 4in tall and he designed the car to comfortably fit someone of his stature too.

The first prototype appeared in October 1976, and production officially began in 1981 in Dunmurry, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Originally, the company intended to manufacture the vehicle in Puerto Rico, however, the Northern Ireland Development Agency offered £100 million towards its construction. As it was a time of political and social unrest for the country, many citizens were left unemployed, the lined up to apply for jobs at the factory. The workers were largely inexperienced, but were paid premium wages and supplied with the best equipment available. The first DMC-12 rolled off the production line on 21st January 1981 until approximately 9,000 DMC-12s were made and manufacturing stopped.

The DeLorean Motor Company went bankrupt in late 1982 following John DeLorean’s arrest in October of that year on drug trafficking charges. He was later found not guilty, but it was too late for the DMC-12 to remain in production.

The DeLorean was catapulted into mainstream culture in 1985 with the release of Back To The Future, sadly, it was too late for the young company.
